Transitions

Learn how to use 7 video transitions and 2 audio transitions. Create smooth and impressive cuts between your clips.

Transitions Overview

VideoBuff offers 7 video transitions and 2 audio transitions. Transitions replace abrupt cuts with smooth, cinematic scene changes.

Each transition duration can be set from 100ms to 3000ms, letting you adjust the tempo to match the mood of the scene. Transitions can be set independently for a clip's entry (in-point) and exit (out-point), so you can use different effects for entering and leaving a scene.

Transition Types

Dissolve is the most common transition, where two clips gradually overlap and blend into each other. Fade to Black fades the footage to black, typically used at the end of a scene. Fade to White fades to white, suitable for flashback or dream sequence effects.

Blur creates a transition where the footage blurs during the changeover. Zoom produces a dynamic transition that scales from the center. Wipe slides the frame in from one direction to reveal the next clip.

Combining these creates professional-quality video productions.

Applying Transitions

To apply a transition, first select a clip on the timeline. Open the Transitions section in the inspector panel and choose the transition type from the dropdown.

Set the duration between 100ms and 3000ms using the slider or numeric input. By default, the same transition is applied to both the clip's entry and exit, but each can be overridden independently.

Applied transitions are shown as a gradient at the clip edges on the timeline for visual confirmation.

Edge-Specific Transition Control

You can set different transitions for a clip's in-point (entry) and out-point (exit). For example, set Dissolve at the in-point for a smooth connection from the previous clip, and Fade to Black at the out-point to close out the scene.

Separate override settings for in-point and out-point allow you to specify type and duration independently. Disabling an override reverts to the clip's default transition settings.

This flexibility enables optimal transition design tailored to the context of each clip.

Audio Transitions

For audio, a Dissolve (crossfade) transition is available. Audio crossfade creates a seamless switch by fading out the previous clip's volume while fading in the next clip's volume simultaneously.

It is particularly effective for transitions between BGM track clips and for natural narration continuity. Video and audio transitions can be set independently, allowing you to create different transition timings for the visual and audio elements.

Technical Note: Transition Rendering

Transitions are implemented via alpha-blending compositing on Canvas. Dissolve transitions linearly interpolate the alpha values of two frames over time for blending.

Blur transitions use progressive gaussian blur with intensity that changes as the transition progresses. Zoom transitions scale from the center point to create expand and contract effects. Wipe transitions use clip-region masking to achieve slide effects.

All transitions are rendered on OffscreenCanvas, with the same processing applied during export.
